Save A Chicken

BUY LOCAL, EAT FRESH, LIVE WELL

Over the last 4 Years, Michael and I have helped save over 1500 hens from going to the animal food plants as their end of life reward for tremendous service.

Commercial laying operations usually retire the hens as soon as they see any decline in production from the 95% level. Most aging flocks will begin to decline in egg production at or around 12-13 months . Many of the high production houses sell these used hens to slaughter houses and to dog food companies at this time. We have been fortunate enough to intercept this

in most all of these operations the hens have never had a day in their lives where they have lived like a chicken or touched one single blade of grass. They usually are kept in very tight quaters or cages, fed high protein feeds only to produce as many eggs as possible and not a single day of sunshine or the opportunity to scratch for bugs or dust bathe in real dirt. We want to provide that experience for these hens and we know from experience when we do they reward us and our community tremendously with large brown eggs for many more years.
